I spent twenty-five years inside the system.
Systems engineering. Federal IT program management. Health IT. Big programs, real stakes, the kind of work where a missed detail costs somebody something that matters.
I was good at it. I knew the rules, and the rules worked. Do the work right. Do it on time. Keep your head down. Growth follows.
Then the ground moved.
The tools changed. The buying changed. Who gets hired, who gets promoted, who gets paid, and why. All of it changed.
And nobody sent a memo.
I watched capable people work harder and harder against a board that had already been rearranged. Not because they were doing something wrong. Because they were playing by a rulebook that quietly expired.
I was one of them.
So I left. I built two businesses on the outside of the system I had spent a career inside. I wrote the proposals, more than $50 million worth. I rebuilt the operations. I learned the new board by standing on it.
Here's what I know now that I didn't know then.
Nobody's coming to hand you the new rules. There's no orientation. The people who figured it out early aren't smarter than you. They just saw the board.
